Common questions asked about executive coaching:
-
What is executive coaching?
Executive coaching is a structured, confidential 1:1 development process between a senior leader and a qualified coach. Through regular sessions, leaders develop a clear purpose and deeper self-awareness - building the behaviours, strategic thinking and stakeholder relationships needed to lead effectively in complex times. Unlike training, coaching is entirely personalised: focused on open discussion in a judgment-free setting, using strengths-based methodologies to catalyse lasting behavioural change.
-
Who benefits from executive coaching?
Executive coaching benefits leaders at all levels of seniority - from Directors and mid-management high-potentials being developed for larger roles, to senior executives and C-suite leaders navigating complex change or leadership transitions. Organisations commission ECC coaching programmes to improve leadership effectiveness, drive inclusive culture, manage risk and retain top talent. Our coaches work across diverse industries globally, from FTSE 350 businesses to high-growth organisations.
-
How long does executive coaching take?
The Executive Coaching Consultancy's executive coaching programmes typically run over 6-9 months, with sessions scheduled at a cadence agreed between coach and coachee. A standard programme includes approximately 10 hours of coaching, delivered in 60-90 minute sessions. Alongside the coaching itself, programmes incude three-way meetings with the individual's manager at the start and end of the engagement, psychometric assessments and progress reviews - ensuring lasting change long after coaching has finished.
-
What qualifications should an executive coach have?
The executive coaching consultancy is one of the UK's leading providers and were the first to the market to offer the solution and additionally train accredited qualified coaches. A qualified executive coach should hold professional accreditation from a recognised body such as the ICF (International Coaching Federation) or EMCC, and be accredited in evidence-based assessment tools. ECC coaches are accredited in a wide range of tools including the Inclusive Leadership Compass™, Hogan, MBTI and Strengths Profile and more and are selected based on each leader's specific programme objectives. All ECC coaches also benefit from regular coach supervision, an important element of professional development that ensures consistently high coaching quality.
-
How do you measure the effectiveness of executive coaching?
The Executive Coaching Consultancy measures coaching effectiveness at three levels. At the individual level, coaching objectives are established at the outset and reviewed regularly throughout the programme - they provide both direction during coaching and a data point to measure progress at the end. At the stakeholder level, three-way meetings with the leader's manager at the start and close of the engagement track visible behavioural change. At the organisational level, where ECC is coaching 10 or more leaders, we provide an anonymised coaching theme report - turning data into actionable insights on culture, leadership gaps and development priorities.
-
What is the difference between executive coaching and mentoring?
Executive coaching is a facilitated process in which a qualified coach asks powerful questions to reframe thinking, holds space for reflection and supports the leader in finding their own solutions - without offering direct advice or direction.
Mentoring involves a more experienced person sharing knowledge and guidance from their own career. ECC's coaching approach focuses on unlocking self-awareness and catalysing behavioural change from within; mentoring focuses on transferring experience. Both are valuable, but serve distinctly different development needs.
-
What is the ROI of executive coaching?
The ROI of executive coaching is measured through improved leadership effectiveness, faster transitions into senior roles, stronger stakeholder relationships and more inclusive team cultures. All of which directly affect retention, productivity, performance and your bottom line.
ECC's work with working parents alone delivers £1.2 million in savings for every 150 new mothers supported through our Parental Transition programme. This is a concrete example of the financial impact well-designed coaching creates. Across all programmes, ECC achieves an NPS of 100 and 100% recommendation rate, reflecting the consistent value organisations report. Industry research (ICF/PwC, 2024) finds organisations that track coaching ROI report a median return of 5–7 times their investment.
What Our Clients Say
The coaches at ECC are commercial, pragmatic and highly focused. The coaching they provide on an individual basis has given valuable insight and helped our senior executives to gain greater perspective in terms of managing relationships, prioritising, strategic thinking, influencing and confidence.
Both from my personal experience of ECC’s approach, and from seeing the impact on our company I can particularly recommend their pragmatic approach and their insight into our collective and individual needs.
