It's time to choose the leaders we need

GERALDINE-187

Hi I’m Geraldine,

With over 30 years of coaching and leadership experience, my work has taken me alongside leaders in boardrooms, professional services, global banks, retail, media, and beyond, often at moments of transition. One truth stands out: progress depends on adaptability. I believe the future belongs to leaders who embrace difference, respond to shifting needs, and harness the richness of their context to unlock growth that is resilient, inclusive, and sustainable.

Too often, though, our bias towards a narrow, often rigid and dominant style of leadership has fuelled inequality, limiting gender and ethnic diversity on boards and our vision of what leadership can be.

Where I started

Geraldine Photo

I realised that leaders needed one to one development and set up ECC on the back of this insight.

Starting out in the retail sector, my primary network , my partner Kate and I quickly expanded across multiple industry sectors introducing the idea of one to one coaching well before it was mainstream.

We discovered the leaky pipeline, and we began to build the bridge for women leaders

Initially coaching predominantly men we soon noticed that there were very few women leaders. Emma joined us following her second maternity leave from a US Investment Bank with the brilliant idea of launching Parental Transition Coaching. This was a game changer and very soon we expanded across the globe adding the best coaches in each of the regions we operated in.

Unpicking the motherhood penalty

We noticed that couples thinking about parenthood, in the parental transition, or going back to work, grappling with the day to day of life as a parent, didn’t have the support they needed to be able to continue to have sustainable and fulfilling careers. We were also conscious of the difficulities around managing someone going through the transition, and we wanted to be able to support the manager, as well as the individual with coaching.

Mastering coaching

Having been a coach for well over 20 years, I qualified as a Master Coach with the Association for Coaching after reaching over 10,000 hours of coaching.

I have coached C-suite leaders from a wide range of industries, including global investment banks, retail, media, and FMCG. I've also coached many women in professional services firms, particularly law and accountancy firms.

Real stories with impact, Shifting the Needle was born.

In my podcast, Shifting the Needle, we unlock real life stories from leaders and change makers. I've coached 100s of people through key inflection points, transformations, and new ends to beginnings. Each unique individual has a story to tell and something to learn from it.

Distilling the system and all its complexities into a book.

I was approached by McGraw Hill Education to write my book Coaching Women, Changing the System Not the Person. This gave me the opportunity to bolster my hands-on coaching experience with academic research. What I found was that there were significant differences in coaching men and women and my talks aim to draw attention to these differences. In essence coaching women is more complex as they are operating in a system that has unseen and unintended barriers. It's like playing with two hands of cards while men simply need to attend to one hand.

In 2025, I became the President...

of the City Women Network.

CWN is a membership organisation that is passionate about strengthening the chain of female leadership and advancing diversity in the workplace for the benefit of our members in business and in wider society.

I am privileged to have accepted the role of President in 2025 and I hope to continue to make CWN a supportive environment for women as I believe strongly in the need for networks like this.
