Executive Coach


Phanella began her career as a finance lawyer at Linklaters and Slaughter and May, including a secondment to work on corporate transactions at Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York. She then moved to become a fund manager, managing the flagship European Equities funds at JPMorgan Asset Management and passing all three levels of the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) Programme.

Coaching Style

Phanella takes a person-centred approach to her coaching, using her natural empathy and warmth to quickly build rapport. Fundamental to her approach is a belief that each client is an expert in their own life, holding within themselves the resources to overcome their challenges and attain their goals. Within this approach, she creates a creative but focussed client-driven environment in which to explore issues whilst driving towards solutions. Her style has been described by clients as warm, thoughtful, supportive and insightful but direct and challenging when required. Phanella also draws on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) tools to assist clients in building confidence and achieving their career goals within the maternity context.

Special Interests

Phanella’s special interest is diversity and inclusion and she is passionate about helping her female clients achieve their career goals. Her recently published book, Step Up: Confidence, Success and Your Stellar Career in 10 Minutes a Day (Random House), is a practical career development guide for women, encouraging them to define their own success and pursue that success in an authentic but effective way. She speaks extensively on gender diversity issues at corporates, public bodies and on the radio and is regularly quoted in the press on topics including female leadership, flexible working, confidence and discrimination.

Phanella is a working mother of three children, parental coaching is an important part of Phanella’s coaching portfolio. With her extensive professional and personal experience of return to work post parental leave, she understands the importance of neutral support through such a profound transition. She also enjoys working with managers to encourage support and dialogue around the parental transition. Her focus is on enabling communication, building confidence and working with her coachees to enable the most successful and enjoyable leave and return to work. She truly believes that parental leave can be a transition that enhances your career, bringing focus and energy and is passionate about supporting her parental transition clients to enhance their careers.

Training and Qualifications

Phanella is an Accredited Executive Coach with the Association for Coaching. She also has an MSc in Organisational Behaviour (Career Management and Counselling) obtained with Merit from Birkbeck, University of London.

She is a qualified Solicitor and has passed the IMC (Investment Management Certificate) as well as all three levels of the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) Programme. Her first degree is in French and German from Oriel College, Oxford University and she is able to coach in both English and French.

Current Clients 

Phanella works with a range of clients with a particular focus on financial and professional services. Current clients include Deutsche Bank, Credit Suisse, Allen & Overy, Akin Gump, Bird & Bird, Cleary Gottlieb, Cooley, Dentons, DLA Piper, Herbert Smith, Macfarlanes and Skadden Arps, as well as corporates such as Reckitt Benckiser.
